Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne
Something about this book just grabbed my attention from the first page. A Ladder to the Sky shows how easy it is to achieve the heights of success if you are prepared to sacrifice your soul.
Maurice Swift decides very early in his career that he does not really care too much about writing his own stories. All he wants is to be famous. He does not care who he treads on to get ahead and make a name for himself. While working as a young waiter, trying to get published as an author, he serves an older gentleman who happens to be a world renowned author. The author, Erich Ackermann, although so highly regarded as a writer is very insecure and Maurice plays on these insecurities. Erich confides in Maurice about certain aspects of his life that he should probably not be telling and Maurice figuratively stabs him in the back with no qualms.
Once Maurice has made his name he starts looking for new ‘victims’. No one is safe from his unscrupulous ways on his way up the ‘ladder to the sky’.
Stories will make him famous but they will also make him beg, borrow and steal. They may even make him do worse.
